Thar: Eight children lost their lives in Civil Hospital Mithi in past two days, making the death toll to reach to 381 since January this year.
Kamran, Sajid, Sughra, Tehmina, Aisha, Nizam Lund, Naroo, and a newborn Bharat Kolhi died at Civil Hospital Mithi. According to unofficial figures, the death toll has risen to 497 since January. The parents complained against lack of facilities and discriminatory and callous attitude of the doctors and other staff of the hospital.
Most of the parents are being forced to shift their children to hospitals in Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
DHO Thar Dr. Chandar Lal Gomani said that mostly newborns and underweight babies have died, and situation is well under control. Dr. Lal told that funds for the salaries of 555 health workers have almost been sanctioned. Meanwhile, Dr. Neemraj, a local activist, said children will continue to die until nutrition, safe drinking water, and healthcare facilities are not ensured to people.
Similarly, CEO of Australian Multicultural Charity Australia Sher Afzal Khan has urged the Sindh government to come up with sophisticated and long term policies to provide nutrition to the pregnant Thari women in order to avoid more fatalities of newborns.
